Government and civil society representatives will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Geneva on Monday and Tuesday. At the European headquarters of the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Office hosts debates on the document's lasting significance. The statement came after the devastating crimes committed by the Nazi regime during World War II. It should prevent something like this from happening again.
The declaration states, among other things, that everyone has the right to life, liberty, security, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. The program in Geneva includes debates on the topic of human rights. Among others, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen participates. At the invitation of Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk, the Federal President will give a speech on Tuesday on the topic “The future of human rights, climate and the environment”. A one-on-one meeting with Türk and a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi are also on the agenda. More contributions are expected from heads of state and government, as well as ministers, some of them via video.
