The nation’s Comptroller, Gerardo Solís, announced this Tuesday morning, July 11, that Panama’s population is 4,202,572.

Solís this Tuesday shared the results of the 2023 national population and housing census.

One of the most notable aspects of this census is that a total of 1,911,824 people reported being covered by Social Security.

In addition, the school population was found to have increased from age 5 to age 19, registering 918,330 students in 2023.

Solís recalled that in the 2000 census there were 2.8 million inhabitants and in 2010 3.4 million. “This census has a special feature, it was a legal census,” he recalled.

Also among the outstanding data is that in Panama a total of one million 286,000 857 people are recognized as Afro descendants.

A total of 698,114 people stated that they belonged to one of the country’s indigenous groups.

The Afro-Colombian population saw a significant increase from 9.2% in 2010 to 31.7% in 2023. While the proportion of people who identified themselves as indigenous descendants was 17.2% in 2023.
