Media concentration affects democracy says Atilio Boron

Center of the capital of Peru’s virtual battlefield for protests

The day began around noon when groups of provincial protesters, coming from regions where there had been fifty deaths in the past two weeks, and those from the capital marched with Peruvian and colorful flags in the wind and placards calling for resignation demanded of the President. Dina Boluarte.

There were several groups, taking different routes in an uncoordinated manner, guarded from the flanks and rear by police officers who are members of the force of nearly 12,000 uniformed personnel deployed.

Along the way, the large police force formed barriers linking their shields to block the path of protesters as they embarked on a route that would take them to the Plaza de Armas, where the Government Palace is located, or the Legislative Palace, both areas closed off , or any other officially prohibited item.

Throughout the day, groups of protesters gathered on a corner leading to the Legislative Palace until they formed a crowd to join the trade union movement march organized by the General Confederation of Trade Unions (CGTP).

A group of young people faced each other, threw stones at the police cordon preventing them from passing and threw tear gas grenades. They managed to breach him more than once, causing him to retreat scatteredly, but the human fence was rebuilt.

Detachments of this group tried to push through the historic center of the city, apparently trying to reach the conservative newspaper El Comercio, and they had a lengthy confrontation with the police, with stones on one side and tear gas on the other, and police sources reported nine police officers were wounded or injured.

At the end of the day, another group attempted to take their protest to the exclusive neighborhoods of San Isidro and Miraflores, despite repeated police barricades.

Meanwhile, the CGTP described as vigorous the nationwide strike in support of provincial protest demands, most notably that of President Boluarte’s resignation.

As a result, protest marches and work stoppages multiplied throughout the day across the country, and roadblocks rose from 106 yesterday to 127 in 44 provinces, according to an official report.
