Centre du Quebec in the sights of wind energy producers

Centre-du-Québec in the sights of wind energy producers

Wind towers could appear in the landscape of the Nicolet region in the Centre-du-Québec region

At least four producers are currently traversing this sector to identify settlement sites.

According to the Nicolet Regional Council (RCM), contracts have already been signed with farmers who want to house towers.

Destination villages include Saint-Léonard-d’Aston, Saint-Zéphirin-de-Courval and Sainte-Perpétue. The Drummondville and Victoriaville sectors are also in the crosshairs.

Hydro-Québec is currently bidding to purchase 300 megawatts of wind energy.

Nicolet’s MRC is fully in favor of serving as a welcome country.

“It’s a great opportunity that we have. As I often say, it ultimately depends on the citizens, but the companies will meet with the citizens to explain the project properly. There may have been times when wind turbines had a greater impact, but now practices have changed,” argued the prefect and mayor of Nicolet, Geneviève Dubois.

The Union of Agricultural Producers (UPA) is at a loss. She had recently made a trip to warn against the construction of towers on the valuable and fertile farmland of Centre-du-Québec.

“The growers we met and also the promoters are well aware from the press release we issued a few weeks ago that our position as a trade union organization is that we don’t want to see that in the dynamic agricultural zone. From then on, the project promoter must prove when the Commission de Protection du Territoire Agricole du Québec will intervene. Then we will intervene,” said Daniel Habel, President of the UPA du Centre-du-Québec.
