CES 2024: McAfee unveils technology that can detect audio deepfakes – L'Éclaireur Fnac

With this technology, called Project Mockingbird, the computer security company aims to help consumers defend themselves against this false content used by cybercriminals.

Increasingly sophisticated generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are useful to cybercriminals. They use it to trick celebrities into making problematic comments, harassing individuals online, or even scamming others by usurping the identity of a family member to make people believe they are in danger. Given the growing threat of these audio deepfakes, McAfee unveiled technology at CES 2024 that can detect them.

The name Project Mockingbird is inspired by mockingbirds, which are known for mimicking or “mocking” the songs of other birds. The goal is to help consumers who are finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction with advances in AI. “Our goal is to give users the clarity and confidence to navigate the nuances of our new AI-driven world and protect their privacy, identity and well-being online,” McAfee Chief Technology Officer Steve Grobman said in an explanation.

Allow us to distinguish truth from untruth

Specifically, the company's technology is capable of detecting whether the audio in a video was likely generated by AI using a combination of contextual, behavioral and categorical recognition models. McAfee claims to be able to detect users with a current 90% accuracy rate and provide them with an unrivaled level of protection. “With McAfee’s latest AI detection capabilities, we provide our customers with a tool that operates with over 90% accuracy to help users understand their digital world and assess the likelihood that content is different from them seem,” assured Steve Grobman.

The company's goal is to enable consumers to identify what is real or fake so they can avoid fraud or detect that a video about an election candidate is real or created by AI for malicious purposes. “The use cases for this AI detection technology are diverse and will prove invaluable given the rise in AI-generated scams and misinformation for consumers,” said McAfee’s director of technology.
