CF Montreal confirms the acquisition of Josef Martinez

CF Montreal announced Tuesday morning that it has signed forward Josef Martinez.

The 2018 MLS Cup winner and Most Valuable Player has signed a one-year contract with an option year for the 2025 season using targeted allocation funds.

This news therefore confirms the information disseminated a few days earlier by Tom Bogert, journalist of The Athletic website, who had mentioned a visit by the veteran for a medical examination. Additionally, a knee injury limited him to just one game during the 2020 season.

Martinez previously played for Atlanta United FC and helped them win the MLS Cup in 2018. That year, he won Major League Soccer's MVP award and the Golden Boot thanks to 31 goals in 34 games. Last year he played for Inter Miami CF, who signed him in a trade in January 2023. The star player found the net seven times in 27 games.

The Florida club confirmed in October that Martinez would not be returning.

The Venezuelan has scored a total of 105 goals in 161 games on the Garber circuit.

Martinez's arrival in Montreal joins those of Uruguayan Matias Coccaro and Bulgarian-Canadian Dominik Yankov.
