The Montreal team did not disclose the amount received, but renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano hinted on Sunday that it was the most lucrative transfer in the team’s history.

“I want to thank the club for everything they have done for me,” Koné said in a statement. I grew up as a player, but also off the pitch. I had to understand a lot, but the people here helped me to develop. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to start my career at home.”

At just 20 years old, Koné has just experienced his first World Championship with Canada. He was involved in the side’s three group stage losses, not without scoring a goal.

He has played all of his 26 Major League Soccer (MLS) games in 2022 for CF Montreal, scoring two goals and providing five assists.

“We are very happy for Ismaël,” said Vice President and CEO of Sport Olivier Renard. Its development and the result of this transmission were very rapid. The club has helped him grow as a player but also as an individual and I’m proud of his progress.”

“If the talent is there, it’s not a question of age or experience. He made his choice from several options available to him. Ismaël is certainly a good example for young Montrealers and Quebecers.”

It will certainly be a heavy loss for CF Montreal, who have also lost Djordje Mihailovic and Alistair Johnston to transfers and need to replace Victor Wanyama, who has indicated his intention to play elsewhere.
