CF Montreal: Sweet Caroline! |

CHARLOTTE | CF Montreal extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a convincing 2-0 win over Charlotte FC and handed Sebastian Breza his first shutout of the season.

In the east, too, Wilfried Nancy’s side took first place with 20 points thanks to the tie between the Philadelphia Union and the New York Red Bulls.

Far from being intimidated by the 33,323 spectators at Bank of America Stadium, the bleu-blanc-noir put on a controlled performance that gave the locals few clear-cut chances. However, Romell Quioto left the game late in the first half with a shoulder injury.

Djordje Mihailovic (45′) and Alistair Johnston (68′) scored for Montreal thanks to a nice pass from Kei Kamara. Johnston played a very big game and became the fifth defender to score this season with his first goal of the year.

A first

Montreal went on a four-game winning streak at home for Charlotte and also became the first team to score more than one goal at Bank of America Stadium
Charlotte had only conceded two goals in five games.

With a 6-0-2 record in their last eight games, the bleu-blanc-noir have recorded a fifth win in their last six games.

He is also unbeaten in his last five games away from home.

And a sign that the defensive game has tightened significantly, he hasn’t conceded more than one goal in his last six games.

Quito wounded

From the start, this match looked like a chess game between two teams that like to have the ball.

Andre Shinyashiki had the first good scoring chance when his shot slammed into the corner of Sebastian Breza’s net post.

It took the final minute of the first half for either team to equalize as Quioto sprinted down the left lane to cross on top of Djordje Mihailovic, who scored his sixth goal of the season with the ball. Injuring a leg a few minutes earlier, Quioto fell to the ground after his pass, writhing in pain.

He went into the dressing room and returned to the bench in the second half with his right arm over his shoulder, which doesn’t bode well.

Sebastian Brez

9/10 | Alistair Johnston

  • He plays a very big match, especially on the offensive level, multiplying cross attempts. He dominated his corridor and scored.

8 / 10 | Sebastian Brez

  • He confidently occupies his space and hits several balls very far. Confidence seems to be returning. He gets his first shutout of the year. (picture above)

8 / 10 | Rudy Camacho

  • The heart of the defense in this meeting, in an unobtrusive but effective role.

8 / 10 | Kei Kamara

  • He brings the assurance of the veteran and plays well with his back to goal on Johnston’s success, to whom he gives an assist. Nice defensive engagement.

7.5/10 | Romell Quioto

  • Injured, he shows courage by ending the first half, the time to pass to Mihailovic, who scores. He injures himself and abandons the game.

7.5/10 | Gabrielle Corbo

  • He’s sometimes drawn to a feint but overall he’s showing great qualities as a replacement for the suspended Joel Waterman.

7.5/10 | Kamal Miller

  • He sometimes went a bit unnecessarily into the front, but again he had a good defensive performance.

7.5/10 | Mathieu Choiniere

  • Another very good performance from the one who finds his position in midfield. Lots of anticipation and great ease with the ball.

7.5/10 | Djordje Mihailovic

  • He had to make do with a player or two on his back all evening. He still finds a way to score at the end of the first half.

7.5/10 | Samuel Piette

  • It gives defensive stability to his entry.

7 / 10 | Joaquin Torres

  • Especially in the first half he impressed with his technical qualities. He disappears in the second half.

7 / 10 | Victor Wanyama

  • Maybe a little less shiny than usual but he’s playing a very decent match and getting close to his set pieces.

6.5/10 | Ishmael Kone

  • It’s a bit difficult at the end of the game because some attempts to clear are blocked.

6/10 | Lassi Lappalainen

  • He can’t get a shot even when he gets in front of the goalkeeper alone. It’s starting to be a problem.

A controlled victory

We knew this game in North Carolina wasn’t going to be easy and yet CF Montreal put on a very solid performance against a club that doesn’t give up much at home.

Wilfried Nancy did not hide his delight at such a performance by his men.

“I’m very, very, very happy with what the boys did because it wasn’t easy. There was a good atmosphere and we hadn’t played on plastic for a long time.

“The guys talked about the shutout for a long time and they pulled it off. »

construction

Rudy Camacho called it a controlled win, and that’s probably the best way to describe a win that the team rarely struggled with.

That streak of eight straight games without a loss is sure to keep everyone happy, and you won’t be surprised to learn that Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline resonated in the Montreal dressing room after the game.

“These are by far my best moments in MLS, not just because we’re winning, but because we’re building on our wins,” Camacho said. When we have the ball we know what to do and we get them in trouble. »

“It’s great to know a series like this, but the best thing is always to see the next game instead of being live in the past,” said Djordje Mihailovic, who scored the game’s opening goal.

Flower

Nancy seems very comfortable with the game system he has introduced and his substitutions, almost all of which are effective, but he wanted to throw flowers at his men.

“We have a good history at the moment and all the credit goes to the players. There is a trust that has been built up since last year.

“If we have precise game plans, the players are happy to implement them. »

In fact, he believes that if the team hasn’t lost since March 12, more than two months, then the whole group deserves credit.

“The players believe in the project and the game plan. We train to include everyone and implement our offensive and defensive concepts.

“For me it has nothing to do with starters and substitutes, it’s a team effort. It’s not the same game with five changes, we can adapt in the second half. »

♦ CF Montreal will visit Nashville SC on Wednesday night before going home to Real Salt Lake next Sunday.
