CFL Alouettes head coach has to work with his competitors

CFL: Alouette’s head coach has to work with his competitors

MONTREAL — Jason Maas is in a special position for his first steps as head coach of the Alouettes as three of his peers ran for his position.

Byron Archambault, Anthony Calvillo and Noel Thorpe were all hit at least once during the process that ultimately led to the 47-year-old American’s nomination. The three men are respectively the special teams, offense and defense coordinators for the next season.

It was managing director Danny Maciocia who strongly suggested Maas keep them working with the club in 2022.

“They have a lot of skills and that’s very positive,” Maas said of his staff. You had an interview for the right reasons. I know Danny Maciocia very well and I trust him. He recommended these guys to me after they didn’t get the job. Danny made me realize how important they were to the team’s successes over the past year.”

Maas is also not afraid of becoming the victim of a mutiny.

“Because of my relationship with Danny, I’m not worried about anyone playing behind my back for personal growth. That’s not the kind of person we have on our coaching staff.

Disappointed but motivated

Archambault, Calvillo and Thorpe made no secret of their disappointment at Maciocia’s verdict. However, the three men claimed that a return to Montreal was the best consolation prize.

“We’ve put that behind us and are focused on the coming season,” said Archambault. The decision was made for good reasons. Jason, he’s a damn good guy. We all want to work in the same direction to get as many wins as possible.”

“Even though I didn’t get the job, I was made to understand that I had something to offer the organization,” Calvillo said. I have a lot of respect for Danny and Jason for allowing me to come back and stay in the town I call home.”

The former star player of “Als” also praised the approach of the newcomer.

“What’s great about this guy is that he’s open-minded about what we were doing before he came along.”

An insurance policy

When asked about this particular situation, Maciocia insisted on remembering that he met the candidates because they had all proven their worth.

“You deserve the opportunity for an interview,” said the DG. I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss with them and see their vision of our future. It was very important to listen to them.”

Maciocia walked on eggshells and gave yet another reason for her return.

“I didn’t want to go through what I went through last year, which was going back to the sidelines,” he revealed, weighing his words. I really don’t want that, but if we ever have problems, I’m sure the person who could replace the head coach will already be on our team.

Maciocia added he is convinced Archambault, Calvillo and Thorpe will one day be head coaches, whether in Montreal or elsewhere.
