Monny could have been our captain

CH: Another year for Sean Monahan

Sean Monahan will continue his adventure in Montreal. The 28-year-old center wrote his name at the end of a one-year, $1.985 million contract with the Canadiens. He therefore chose to remain loyal to CH rather than test the free agent market without compensation.

In the team’s tally at the end of the season, Monahan had shown color.

“If I could go back here, I would find it really special,” he said. I haven’t played enough games at the Bell Centre. I got goosebumps jumping on the Bell Center ice. We’ll see if we can find common ground.

Kent Hughes and the Monahan clan have agreed to a one-year contract. Given the Ontarian’s high medical burden, it was a logical decision for both sides.

Salary-wise, the former Calgary Flames first-round pick will make significantly less money than in the past. In August 2016, Monahan landed a lucrative seven-year, $44.625 million ($6.375 million average) deal with the Flames.

Brad Treliving, the Flames’ former GM, had traded him to CH in August 2022 for a first-round pick in 2025, simply to free himself from the last year of his contract.

too many wounds

Monahan played just 25 games for the Canadiens last year, recording 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists). He had made a promising start to the team and, after a few games on the front row wing, took on an honest role as second center.

However, a broken right foot and groin injury ruined his season. He has not played in the last 57 games on the schedule. Towards the end of the season he underwent surgery for a torn groin.

“I played with a broken foot, ran with a protective shoe and compensated elsewhere to keep going,” he said during the assessment. I was skating with a limp. I ended up hurting my groin. I decided to have surgery and now I’m healed. My injuries this season had nothing to do with the hip problems I had in recent years.
