At the ceremony, Brisbane’s Lachie Neale won his second Brownlow Medal as the AFL’s best and fairest player in a thrilling countdown that saw him edge out Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli by just two votes.

The Lions midfielder secured victory when he received the maximum number of three votes in his team’s finals win over Collingwood, giving him a total of 31 votes.

That put him squarely ahead of a crowded field that included Collingwood’s Nick Daicos, who received an impressive 28 votes despite missing the final four games of the home-and-away season with a broken leg.

Port Adelaide’s Zac Butters and Sydney surprise team Errol Gulden were next with 27 votes, while Melbourne striker Christian Petracca – one of the favorites for the honor – was one vote behind with 26 votes.

Lachie attended the satellite event in Brisbane rather than the main ceremony in Melbourne as he and his Lions teammates prepare for Saturday’s grand final against Collingwood.

Lachie’s second Brownlow puts him in competition with double medalists Gary Ablett Jr, Greg Williams, Adam Goodes, Robert Harvey and Chris Judd – with the Lions’ lynchpin needing another medal victory to be one of the only players who have won the award three times: Ian Stewart, Bob Skilton, Haydn Bunton Sr. and Dick Reynolds.
