Longtime Sunrise entertainment reporter Nelson Aspen has announced that he is leaving the show after nearly 20 years on the air.

The 58-year-old shared the shock news on Friday on Sunrise while appearing via a live cross on the Channel Seven show.

“After 19.5 years at Sunrise, I’m giving you my two-week notice,” Nelson began to a surprised Natalie Barr and backup host Michael Usher.

Nelson said he is leaving the show to focus on the release of his new book, Your Home Is Your Castle.

“I’m going to go and finish my new book… and I’m going to do a book tour, a question and answer show… that will cover Australian cities. And then we look back on the 15th with a farewell.”

Host Natalie Barr appeared upset but told Nelson: “It’s not goodbye”.

“Nelson it’s been a wonderful ride we will miss you but it’s not goodbye as we have two weeks to say that.”

He finished: “It’s only so long”.

The experienced American journalist has been appearing at Sunrise for almost 20 years.

He has worked with hosts such as Melissa Doyle, Samantha Armytage and Natalie Barr.

In 2018, to celebrate 15 years of Nelson on the show, Nelson reflected on his time on Sunrise while flashbacks played.

He said he was grateful “to have the opportunity to interview so many stars.”

“Just having the experience of being a part of the Sunrise family and coming to Australia and meeting you and the fans…these are extraordinary opportunities,” added Nelson.

He was recently recognized by the Publicists Guild of America as 2020 International Media Journalist of the Year by none other than Jennifer Aniston.

Throughout his career, Nelson has interviewed the likes of Julie Andrews, Harrison Ford and Rose Byrne, and helped cover events like the Oscars for Sunrise.
