Following the resignation of the search committee, the postponement of the upcoming documenta German art exhibition cannot be ruled out from the management’s point of view. The 16th edition is scheduled for 2027 in Kassel. Traditionally, the documenta takes place every five years. “The question of when is not the top priority in the current situation,” documenta managing director Andreas Hoffmann said today, according to dpa.
“It’s about leading documenta towards a good future,” says Hoffmann. The first step is to restart the documenta “operating system”. The organizational structure is currently being examined. With the help of external experts, we analyze responsibilities, structures and processes. Only when this realignment process is complete can the next step be taken: starting the discovery process again.
Two developments are currently affecting documenta: trust has been lost due to anti-Semitic incidents at documenta fifteen. Furthermore, there are heated debates following the terrorist attacks in Israel. As a result, the search committee’s work process came under increasing pressure.
Last year’s documenta fifteen was already overshadowed by an anti-Semitism scandal. The exhibition is considered, alongside the Venice Biennale, the most important exhibition of contemporary art.
