Following the New England Patriots' promotion of Jerod Mayo, seven NFL teams are now looking for new head coaches, and the man who may be the most interesting candidate on the market could be ready for an interview.
According to NFL Media, the Los Angeles Chargers are expected to speak with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh next week. The younger brother of Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh just led the Wolverines to a national championship on Monday and reportedly hinted that there's a real possibility he leaves the college ranks to take over in LA
NFL Media previously reported that multiple teams were making calls and gathering information about Harbaugh, but Michigan would like to keep its leader. Last month, it was reported that Harbaugh was offered a 10-year, $125 million contract that included the restriction that he could not accept or accept an NFL job this offseason. He has options.
Harbaugh last coached in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers in 2014. He posted a remarkable 44-19-1 record in four seasons and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in his second season in 2012. It has been reported that the league believes the Chargers are Harbaugh's preferred landing spot if he opts for a change of scenery. He is also reportedly open to other power structures and will not force the hiring of a general manager. NFL Media reported that the Las Vegas Raiders are considering signing Harbaugh, but All-Pro pass rusher Maxx Crosby will reportedly request a trade if interim coach Antonio Pierce doesn't get the full-time job.
