Whether Justin Herbert will try Sunday — fractured rib cartilage and all — has yet to be decided as the Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback is in doubt for Sunday’s home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“It’s a decision we still have to make in a few days,” Herbert said Friday. “That decision will be made on Sunday.”
Head coach Brandon Staley reiterated that he is looking at Herbert for each day and said the team will make a decision based on the progress he makes over the rest of the week leading up to Sunday. Herbert did not train on Friday after limited sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.
Herbert was injured in the Chargers’ Week 2 loss to the Chiefs when he suffered a hard hit in the ribs late in the fourth quarter. He missed just one play before returning to the game but was in apparent pain throughout the remainder of the contest.
“It’s up to us, our team, to make the best decision,” Herbert said.
Staley confirmed that Chase Daniel would start if Herbert wasn’t playing the Jags.
Herbert is hardly the only cause for concern about the Bolts’ injury report.
Wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring), who missed Week 2, is doubtful for Week 3 while center Corey Linsley (knee) and cornerback JC Jackson are doubtful. Allen was restricted on Wednesday and Thursday before sitting out practice on Friday and Staley said he will be a game-time decision. Linsley and Jackson didn’t train all week.
