Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid, Champions League: post-match reactions, ratings

Well, the good news is that there are no away goals in this year’s competition. And we can beat this team. Just don’t have to play terribly.

Chelsea started well, with plenty of energy and momentum, but then Karim Benzema defended a free header to open the scoring with a sort of defense reminiscent of last weekend.

Then, just a few minutes later, Karim Benzema did a Karim Benzema and suddenly we were two behind at almost 25 minutes on the clock and suddenly things looked a lot worse.

Chelsea came back into play to our credit and also put one back on the scoreboard when Kai Havertz found the back of the net before half-time.

But the second half started in disastrous circumstances when we gave Benzema his hat-trick. Chelsea tried to get one back at least before the end of 90 minutes but to no avail. We had a few chances, some really good ones, but we didn’t have the finishing touches.

So Real goes into the second leg next week with a two-goal advantage.

  • Azpilicueta stands in for left-back otherwise an expected 3-4-3 from Tuchel. Back four after halftime, with Azpi in the back left.
  • Double change at halftime, then another double change just after the hour mark. There’s not much going on with either of them.
  • Consecutive losses in all competitions since late September
  • Next: Southampton away on Saturday
