The team confirmed on Wednesday that Alan Williams has tendered his resignation.

Alan Williams is out as Chicago Bears defensive coordinator.

“Alan Williams submitted his resignation as the team’s defensive coordinator this afternoon,” the Bears said in a statement released Wednesday.

USA TODAY Sports received Williams’ resignation letter.

“It is with great regret that I announce my resignation as defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears club, effective immediately,” the statement said. “I’m taking a step back to take care of my health and my family.”

Williams, 53, has been away from the Bears since last week.

A Bears spokesman refuted social media rumors that authorities had searched Halas Hall and said police had not visited the team in connection with Williams.
