Chicago Cubs and Drew Smiley signed a one-year contract

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with left-hander Drew Smiley, the team announced Saturday.

The deal is worth $5.25 million and Smyly could earn an additional $2.5 million in bonuses, a source told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

The Cubs also announced one-year deals with infielder Jonathan Villar and left-hander Daniel Norris. The Smyly and Villar deals include mutual options for the 2023 season.

Smelee, 32, won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves last season when he went 11-4 with a 4.48 ERA in 29 games (23 starts). He pitched twice in the Braves World Series win over the Houston Astros, allowing three runs in four innings.

He signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Cubs in December 2017, but never played for Chicago. Coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2017, Smiley was short of time to get into major league play in 2018 and was traded to the Texas Rangers in November of that year.

He is 46-39 with a 4.18 ERA in his career pitching for the Tigers (2012-14), Races (2014-16), Rangers (2019), Phillies (2019), Giants (2020) and Braves.

Villar is scheduled to receive a $4.5 million salary in 2022 and there is a $10 million mutual option with a $1.5 million buyout. He receives a $500,000 bonus for reaching 500 record appearances. Norris’ contract is worth $1.75 million and the lefty can earn up to $2 million in incentives. Norris played for Detroit and Milwaukee last year, going 2-3 with a 6.16 ERA in 56 games.

Also Saturday, the Cubs placed infielder David Bothe on the injured list for 60 days while he recovers from surgery on his left shoulder, and right-hander Tommy Nance was placed on the COVID-19-related injury list.
