Chiefs Free Agency 2023: Defensive tackles Byron Cowart and Phil Hoskins signed – Arrowhead Pride

On Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs added two people to their line of defense.

JL Sports — the agency representing free agent defensive tackle Byron Cowart — announced that his client would be coming to Kansas City.

The New England Patriots selected Cowart, who was once ESPN’s No. 1 high school draft, in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft. The former Maryland Terrapin and Auburn Tiger played 19 games in his first two seasons and started 2020 in 14 games. He totaled 27 tackles and a sack for New England.

After missing the entire 2021 season through injury, New England withdrew Cowart on the eve of training camp in 2022. Then claimed by the Indianapolis Colts, he appeared in each of their games last season and registered 12 tackles.

Later on Friday, Jordan Schultz of The score reports that the Chiefs were too Re-signing of defensive tackle Phil Hoskins.

Amid the playoff excitement, some Chiefs fans may have missed that Hoskins — a 2021 seventh-round pick for the Carolina Panthers — joined the team’s practice squad on Jan. 12. He stayed there until Super Bowl LVII.

In eight career games with the Panthers, Hoskins registered six tackles and one sack. The Chiefs seem interested in a longer look at the Kentucky product.

While contract terms for these two players are yet to be revealed, Cowart or Hoskins are unlikely to be in line for more than their respective minimum salaries.

With the moves, Kansas City added 61 players to its offseason roster. We estimate the team’s available salary cap to be between $3.6 million and $5.5 million – most likely $4.9 million.
