Child attacked in Shippagan dies

The 11-year-old boy who was attacked with a scooter in Shippagan on Thursday died from his injuries.

Thomas Haché died Saturday night at IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax surrounded by members of his family.

According to relatives, the child was playing outside when a 15-year-old teenager hit him with a scooter behind his head.

Seriously injured, the boy was first transported to Tracadie Hospital before being transferred by helicopter to IWK Children’s Hospital.

He suffered from a fractured skull and a cerebral hemorrhage, and his health deteriorated rapidly despite an operation.

Because he was in a coma, his health was classified as critical.

The RCMP said the day after the death that the investigation launched into the incident was “advanced” without wanting to reveal details of this story, which has rocked the Shippagan community.

Police did not say whether the alleged attacker had been questioned and arrested, or whether charges would be brought against him.

Sergeant Jean-François Martel limited himself to saying that no court date is currently scheduled.

Shippagan Mayor Kassim Doumbia expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, urging the population to be respectful on social media.

“The entire community is affected by this situation. Thomas will have fought to his last breath,” the mayor wrote in a message posted on social media.

He added that flags are already flying at half-staff in the Acadian Peninsula community.

The mayors of Campbellton and Edmundston also offered condolences to the family on behalf of their respective communities.

During this time, several local residents went to deposit stuffed animals and other items in front of the bereaved family’s home.

Thomas Haché attended L’Envolée School in Shippagan, a school attended by nearly 400 students.

In a message to parents, the school management said that a special intervention team will be present at the elementary school on Monday to support students and staff shaken by the tragedy.

A crowdfunding campaign was launched over the weekend by family friends to help her financially through this ordeal.

More than $5,200 was raised in less than 24 hours.
