A child has been killed after a car crashed into a primary school in south-west London, injuring six other children and two adults, London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Police also said the driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 40s, was arrested “on suspicion of causing her death as a result of dangerous driving.”

The incident is not classified as terrorist.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the serious collision as “absolutely devastating”. In a tweet, Khan said his “sympathy goes out to all those affected” and urged people to avoid the area to allow emergency services free access.

“An investigation is ongoing to understand the full circumstances and I remain in close contact with the Met and other emergency services,” Khan said.

Police were called at 09:54 to report that a car had collided with a Camp Road elementary school building, police said in a statement. The facility is a fee-paying girls’ school for female students aged 4 to 11 years.

The prestigious Wimbledon tennis championships started in the neighborhood on Monday.
