Children attacked with poker: two charges of attempted murder filed

Alexis Lavoie-Gilbert, the person suspected of attacking two young children in Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges a week ago, was formally charged on Monday with two counts of attempted murder.

The 31-year-old from Lévis allegedly attempted to cause the death of two small children [les] to strike with a poker,” we can read in the indictment filed Monday afternoon at the Quebec courthouse.

The incident occurred on October 14th in a residential building in Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges.

According to the Sûreté du Québec, the two toddlers were taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, but there is no fear for their lives.

Serious allegations

Lavoie-Gilbert, who has no criminal record, already faced two counts of aggravated assault and two additional counts of assault with a weapon last week. There is also currently an accusation of attempted murder.

The charge of attempted murder is punishable by life imprisonment under the Criminal Code.

To protect the identity of the victims, a publication ban was issued. Therefore, the connection between the accused and the two children cannot be disclosed.

Alexis Lavoie-Gilbert’s filing has been postponed until October 27th.
