Chile lifts red alert in Viña de Mar over fires

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of Interior and Public Security (ONEMI) of Chile said this Sunday that the red alert is lifted and declares a yellow alert for the municipality of Viña del Mar due to the forest fires that have affected the country for more than one Week.

Onemi’s report indicated that the fire, dubbed Nueva Esperanza, is “under control” and regarding the impact of this fire, community teams remain on the ground to assess the impact on people and damage to homes in the sector .

Two people died as a result of the fire, and figures for the 270 homes affected and 67 injured are kept up to date, although “the extent of the damage to these homes will be confirmed when the collection of basic emergency sheets is complete,” warned onemi.

“Furthermore, it maintains the constitutional exemption from disasters due to public calamities for the municipality of Viña del Mar, in force since December 23,” the report presented by the agency reads.

For her part, Interior Minister Carolina Tohá Morales stressed that although there are still active sources, the incident “no longer constitutes a direct warning to the population in the environment”.

He also reported that 70 wildfires were fought across Chile between Saturday and Sunday, 38 of which are still active.

Local media have pointed out that firefighters confirm that “unfortunately, the houses are irregular, which makes construction very easy. Generally made of wood. Therefore, the spread becomes very fast.”
