China: 18 miners trapped underground in Xinjiang ANSA news agency

In China, relief efforts were mobilized to free 18 people trapped underground after a gold mine collapse in the northwest region of Xinjiang. That’s what the official media reported.
The collapse happened around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday in Yining County of Illi Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, the Xinhua News Agency reported. The area is located about a hundred kilometers from Kazakhstan.
A total of 40 people were working underground when the accident happened. Twenty-two miners were brought to the surface but 18 remain trapped. “Rescues are underway to recover the miners,” Xinhua reported.
Mining safety has improved in China over the past few decades, but they are still quite common. In December 2021, two miners stranded in a flooded coal mine in Shanxi died and 20 others were rescued after rescue operations.
In September last year, 19 miners trapped underground after a coal mine collapse in Qinghai province were found dead after a long search.
