China implements more lockdowns affecting iPhone factory

As the number of COVID cases has increased in China, the local government is once again enforcing lockdown measures in the country. This time, a new lockdown in the city of Zhengzhou is jeopardizing operations at the main iPhone factory.

As Bloomberg reports, Chinese authorities announced on Friday that areas in Zhengzhou Airport’s economic zone were immediately quarantined. As a result, people cannot leave their homes until further notice. The report notes that the largest iPhone factory owned by Foxconn is located in this area. The company has been asking employees to take mandatory COVID tests in recent days.

Both Foxconn and Apple have not answered how the lockdown will affect operations. However, this isn’t the first time Apple’s product production has been hit by lockdowns in China this year. Last month, Foxconn suspended operations in Shenzhen due to another lockdown following a COVID outbreak.

The Taiwanese company also has factories there that are responsible for assembling iPhone and other Apple products.

According to analysts, the recent lockdowns could result in the loss of 6 to 10 million iPhone units. At the same time, the production of devices such as the high-end MacBook Pro and the new 5th generation iPad Air is also affected as the estimated delivery dates have been increased significantly.

Other Apple suppliers such as Pegatron and Quanta Computer have also suspended operations in east China, which is sure to affect Apple’s product inventories as well.
