Crackdown in Changchun, China. Nine million residents of this city, located in the north-east of the country, were placed in custody, local authorities announced on Friday, March 11. Only one person per household is allowed to go outside once every two days, the mayor’s office said. The Omicron variant is behind localized outbreaks in China that have affected 1,369 people in the last 24 hours on Friday, according to the Ministry of Health.

This detention is the largest announced in China since the detention in the northern metropolis of Xi’an with its 13 million inhabitants at the end of last year.

The country where the virus was initially detected in late 2019 quickly contained the epidemic in the spring of 2020 with very strict containment measures affecting entire cities. Thus, the Asian giant has largely managed to stop the infection, with official losses of just over 100,000 cases, including 4,636 deaths, in two years.
