This is the highest number since the very first wave of the epidemic in early 2020. China reported 5,280 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, March 15, in the last 24 hours. The country where Sars-CoV-2 was detected at the end of 2019 managed to stop the pandemic on its territory by resorting to strict containment measures, but the Omicron variant has spawned numerous epidemic foci in recent months.
Over the past few days, tens of millions of residents of the world’s most populous country have been placed under home quarantine, in particular in the Shenzhen metropolis, in the south of the country, at the gates of Hong Kong. The measures have led to the closure of many factories, including Taiwanese giant Foxconn, Apple’s main supplier, in the metropolitan area of 17 million people.
Tuesday’s data was largely affected by losses in Jilin Province, which borders North Korea. More than 3,000 infections have been registered in this region alone. If these numbers remain modest compared to balance sheets recorded elsewhere in the world, they are high for China, where there have been only about 120,000 cases of Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic.
