China rejects US criticism of human rights and use of space

Beijing.- China today expressed its disagreement with statements made by the United States on the human rights situation here and also on its development and aspirations in the space sector.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, stressed that the 2021 North American Human Rights Report is full of political lies and ideological prejudice against the Asian giant.

He saw it as another example of northern country hypocrisy and double standards because, while professing to be a world judge, it has “debts and crimes at home and abroad.”

The spokesman mentioned existing problems on US soil, such as the high number of deaths and infections due to the mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of discriminatory migration policies, gun violence and inhumane treatment in prisons.

He denounced that the White House, seeking hegemony, had launched wars and subversive actions in different countries around the world, resulting in the displacement of large waves of refugees and the deaths of thousands of people.

He also blamed the repeated use of sanctions and measures to put pressure on other nations, as well as the existence of a network of secret prisons where inmates are detained and tortured without charge.

“What the United States needs to do is immediately stop accusations that it is no longer attacking the human rights of other countries and examine itself (…) to improve its own situation,” he said.

On the other hand, Zhao dismissed Washington’s determination to see China’s and Russia’s activities in space as a threat, specifying that in this way it wanted to create a pretext for expanding its military power and guaranteeing hegemony in the sector.

“This is yet another manifestation of clinging to the Cold War mentality and evading responsibility. The United States is the greatest threat to space security. Your government openly defined it as a battlefield, accelerated the creation of a special forces unit and (…) deployed offensive weapons,” he noted.

Noting the peaceful nature of China’s space program, the official noted that it addresses its socio-economic, technological and security needs, and called for the White House to stop making allegations against China.
