China suspends cooperation with the US

After the deterioration in relations between Beijing and Washington, exacerbated by the trip to Taiwan by the speaker of the US House of Representatives, China announced on Friday (5) that it had decided to open a series of cooperation agreements between the country and the United States to end changes in areas such as climate change, drug policies and military partnerships.

The Chinese vowed to take a series of measures to punish the US for Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island, which Beijing considers part of its territory.

The actions began with a series of military drills held at six points along Taiwan’s coast and are expected to continue through Sunday. According to Taiwan Defense, missiles were even fired over the island.

China accuses Joe Biden’s government of violating its sovereignty, even though the president has no authority over a Legislature leader’s travel.

The Chinese reactions came ahead of the Chinese Communist Party Congress, where President Xi Jinping is expected to receive a third fiveyear term to lead the government.

Facing the country’s struggling economy, the ruling party stepped up its nationalist tone and launched daily attacks on the Taiwanese government, which refuses to recognize the province as part of China, in order to solidify popular support.
