BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) — The Americas Summit cannot simply serve the United States’ own interests, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday, urging the United States to respect the sovereignty and dignity of Latin American countries.
Chinese spokesman Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a regular news conference while responding to a question that Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela may be barred from the summit to be held by the United States in Los Angeles in June.
“The summit cannot simply apply US standards or serve US self-interest. It cannot be reduced to a US summit,” Zhao said.
“Next year, it will be 200 years since the United States proposed the Monroe Doctrine,” Zhao added, noting that the United States has not supported Latin American countries and bullied them at will.
The spokesman pointed out that the United States has not only brought no benefit to Latin American countries, but has also exploited them, imposed sanctions on them, exported inflation to them, engaged in political interference, regime overthrow and political assassinations in them and even it have launched armed aggression against them.
Despite opposition from the international community and regional countries, the United States insists on maintaining unilateral and illegal sanctions against some Latin American countries, smudges the legitimate actions of Latin American countries to cooperate with other countries to advance development, and lacks fundamental respect for Latin American countries said Zhao.
“We hope that the US side will seriously respect the sovereignty and dignity of Latin American countries and will seriously adhere to the basic norms that govern international relations,” Zhao said, adding that there is no market in Latin America or elsewhere the Monroe Doctrine exist in the world.
