China urges US not to interfere in Taiwan election

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning called on Washington to carefully and appropriately handle issues related to the region, stop official exchanges and not send false signals to separatist forces.

If the United States truly wants to maintain peace and stability in the Strait, “it should clearly oppose Taiwan independence and support peaceful reunification,” the spokesman said.

Mao recalled that the One China principle represents a general consensus accepted by the international community, while separatism is “a path doomed to failure.”

Taiwan is preparing for the island's leadership election scheduled for tomorrow, in which Lai Ching-te, current vice president and candidate of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (PDP), is one of the favorites.

The Asian giant's foreign ministry recently described him as a separatist and troublemaker whose actions could put him at “risk of military conflict.”

Beijing expressed hope that the Taiwanese will recognize the extreme harm of the DPP's policies and the grave danger posed by Lai and “make the right decision at the crossroads of cross-strait relations.”
