Chris Bath breaks down in tears as Channel Ten pays tribute to Perth journalist Nick Way who lost his battle with motor neuron disease
Chris Bath shared a moving tribute to Perth journalist Nick Way, who lost his battle with motor neuron disease on Friday aged 63.
In a segment on the Channel Ten news, the journalist was visibly in tears as she said goodbye to her colleague.
“The Ten News First family mourns the passing of respected Perth journalist Nick Way, who has lost his battle with motor neuron disease,” said the 55-year-old.

A tribute package was then played, showing highlights from Nick’s career.
“Nick Way was a gifted storyteller. Across three decades, he never failed to form a deep connection with those he covered, often remaining in close contact with them long after the news cameras had stopped rolling.”
“His stories shone through even our darkest chapters, the Bali bombings. Many of the survivors still call Nick a very good friend.”

It continued, “Nick always gave a voice to those struggling to find their own. He championed so many wonderful causes and when it came to his own health struggle, he would dig in and raise tens of thousands of dollars for research.
‘Here in Ten, Nick taught so many the trade. We will never forget his beautiful smile and voice. Our deepest condolences to his wife Karen and their loved ones.’
Chris then returned to the screen, her eyes sparkling with emotion as she said: “Vale Nick, and our condolences to his family.”
Nick’s wife Karen, 29, revealed to The West Australian that Nick was in a specialist care facility in Cottesloe while she was in New Zealand for her nephew’s wedding when Nick “had a twist” and died from a suspected blood clot in his lungs.

“It was like he was waiting for me to be here in New Zealand to be with all my family and he made the decision that it was time to go,” she told the newspaper

“He wanted to remain as independent as possible but he just couldn’t take care of himself anymore and lost the ability to speak last August. Talking was his favorite pastime and he loved being the center of attention.
“But he had a great life, we traveled so much and he did so many things that a lot of people never get the chance to do. We have a lot of really great memories.’
