Chris Pine has revealed he chopped off his long locks after his publicist hilariously compared him to Friends icon Rachel Green.
Pine, 42, – who stars in new movie Dungeons & Dragons – grew his hair out last year and debuted it at the Venice Film Festival while promoting Don’t Worry Darling – but the new look was approved by his colleague not very well received.
“I thought I looked pretty, pretty bow tie, hair was long, everything happened, and my publicist said I look like Rachel from Friends,” Chris told Esquire.
“I couldn’t help but hear it,” he said, “and it was the first day and my first time in Venice…”
Jennifer Aniston, who played Green on Friends from 1994 to 2004, became a hairstyle icon with her layered haircut dubbed “The Rachel Cut,” with the style becoming one of the most popular haircuts of the 1990s.
Oh dear: Chris Pine (L in September 2022) has revealed he has cut off his long locks after his publicist hilariously compared him to Friends icon Rachel Green (R).
Hissing: These days, Pine’s hair is cropped short and he’s embracing the salt-pepper color of his tresses
Pine added: “It was a long flight to Italy. I was so jet lagged and then you get thrown into a press conference where you can talk about a film you made five and a half years ago. I was just tired, to be honest.’
And it was at the Venice Film Festival that Spit-Gate got its start.
In one viral moment, Harry Styles appeared to have spat on his Don’t Worry Darling co-star as they sat next to each other at the film’s premiere.
During the bizarre interaction, Pine — who clapped as Styles took his assigned seat next to him — appeared to stop suddenly, look down at his leg and stick his tongue out in disbelief.
The laughing actor then cast an amusing glance back at the pop star – who was too busy adjusting his jacket and smiling around the room to notice Pine’s cheeky reaction.
A source close to Pine told Web: “Harry Styles wasn’t spitting at all. People are seeing a strange illusion online that is clearly deceptive.
And Pine broke the record of what really happened in Venice.
“I think what he said is he leaned down, and I think he said, ‘It’s just words, isn’t it?’ Because we had this little joke, because we’re all jet lagged, we all try to answer these questions and sometimes when you do this press stuff your brain gets all messed up, you know, you start talking gibberish and we had a joke like, “It’s just words, man. “
At the time, a Pine rep fired back at the “spit” scandal: “This is a ridiculous story…a complete fabrication and the result of a weird online illusion that is clearly deceptive and allows for silly speculation.”
Venice Blues: “I thought I looked pretty, pretty bow tie, hair was long, everything happened, and my publicist said I look like Rachel from Friends,” Chris told Esquire
Looking good: Pine is next in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
“Just to be clear, Harry Styles did NOT spit on Chris Pine,” she continued.
“There is nothing but respect between these two men, and any other suggestion is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”
Pine also addressed Don’t Worry Darling’s press tour, which was dominated by alleged drama on the film’s set and speculation about Olivia Wilde’s salad recipe.
“If there was drama, there was drama,” he told Esquire of filming the film. However, he clarified for the record: “I knew absolutely nothing about it, nor would I have really cared.
“If I feel bad, it’s because the vitriol the film got was totally disproportionate to what was on screen.
“Venice was a normal thing pulled into a narrative that people wanted to make, amplified by the metastasis that can happen in the Twittersphere. It was ridiculous.’
Pine also commented on a fourth Star Trek film that has been in the works for years. For now, the actor insists he doesn’t know anything about the film’s status – but he believes the franchise is cursed.
“After the last one came out and didn’t make the $1 billion everyone wanted and then Anton — Yelchin, who played Chekov — died, I don’t know,” he continued. “It just seemed… feels like it’s cursed.”
