Chris Rock has yet to come forward to being slapped by Will Smith during Sunday’s 94th Oscars ceremony. Fans are betting on the chance that could change on Wednesday night.
Rock will be performing back-to-back shows at Boston’s Wilbur Theater and the anticipation has spurred ticket sales in the secondary market, according to media reports and resale websites.
StubHub, a ticket exchange and resale company, told the Hollywood Reporter that in the days following the Oscars incident, it recorded 25 times daily sales for Rock’s shows, more than total sales for the comedian’s tour in March.
“At this stage of his tour, on an average day, we expect to see a spike in sales in the 24 or 48 hours leading up to a show date when last minute sales hit – but it’s incredibly unusual to see the spike that we’ve seen,” he said Mike Silveira, spokesman for StubHub, told .
StubHub has more than a dozen tickets for Wednesday’s rock shows for sale, ranging in price from $444 to $1,705 per ticket. Of course, these are just asking prices – it’s unclear if anyone will buy seats at these levels.
Users took to social media to report that ticket prices had gone from just $40 before the incident to three-digit price tags after the altercation.
StubHub officials did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
Ticket market TickPick announced on Monday that it has sold more tickets to see Rock Overnight after the slap than it has in the past month combined.
TickPick currently has three tickets for the 7:30 show and four for the 10:00 show on sale. Prices range from $800 to $1,100 each.
Ticketmaster’s website states that both the 7:30pm and 10pm shows are sold out. Meanwhile, Vivid Seats currently has four tickets for the 10pm show, two of which are listed for $768 and two for $966.
