Christina Applegate brings Candace Owens to BLAST after branding SKIMS underwear ad

Conservative pundit and author Candace Owens spoke out against a new ad for a SKIMS Adaptive Scoop Bralette featuring a model in a wheelchair on Tuesday’s episode of her show on The Daily Caller…which has angered actress Christina Applegate.

Owens, 33, ran the SKIMS ad on her show with a model in a wheelchair before adding: “I don’t really understand how far we’re going to take this inclusion thing. I really don’t get it. I don’t know. If I’m wrong, explain it to me today. I just want to be educated in the comments. Why did they do this? I don’t know, I don’t know why this needs to be done. I’m just sick of this all inclusive thing. It seems ridiculous.

She added, “Look, I assume people in wheelchairs need to buy bras too, need to buy underwear too… I didn’t realize we had to face that. Little did I know that because we as a society cannot get to the bottom of our ridiculousness, we now have to look forward to campaigns where women in wheelchairs are now wearing bras and underwear.”

Applegate – who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021 and revealed February’s SAG Awards may have been her last awards show due to her struggles with MS – took to Twitter early Thursday morning to share her thoughts on Owens’ comments.

“Yes, late tweet. But when I woke up, I saw the most terrible thing. This candace person making comments about companies who see we need help. It’s bloody gross,” Applegate said.

Late: “Yes, late tweet. But woke up to see the scariest thing. This candace person making comments about companies who see we need help. It’s bloody gross,” Applegate said

“Thank you Skims and Tommy and Guide Beauty and @neowalksticks for visiting,” he added with the hashtag #youshouldknowbetter.

She also responded to a fan who said Owens wasn’t worth spending “air or mind space,” adding, “Honestly, she doesn’t take up a place in my world. But I always have to call someone who needs to see it. She will wake up in the morning and her heart will hurt and hopefully she will change. All we can hope for.’

The Married With Children star also responded to a fan who said she needed ‘clothes like these’ too, telling her: ‘Just google accessibility lines. It’s all new. The fashion industry is trying. With the shoes you can slip into the cosmetics.”

The actress later tweeted, “I’m going to try to sleep but my anger is keeping me awake,” before opening up to Owens about her struggles.

“Candace Owens, if you’ve seen pictures of me, you know how damn hard it was to get dressed? A team must help me!!! That’s why I’m looking forward to barrier-free clothing for me and my community. Hope you wake up,’ Applegate said.

She then reached out to Owens and explained that she would be willing to speak to her if she wanted, perhaps because she said on her show, “If I’m wrong, explain to me.”

“I thought my last tweet was enough. But then my heart said otherwise. no anger When Candace wants to call me to get clarification on her disability. I will not come with anger. I will come with love Because she needs to hear this. I’m praying for her tonight…sincerely,” Applegate added.

Owens himself responded to that tweet Thursday morning, saying: “Hey Christina – big fan of yours. I would be happy to talk to you. DM’s open ❤️’

She added, “I think Christina, what you may have overlooked is that the coverage of absurd DEI initiatives is a recurring hit on my show.”

“We actually didn’t know that this particular ad featured special technology for people with disabilities, which was an honest mistake,” admitted Owens.

She added in another tweet: “What we thought at the time was another nonsensical DEI Representation Matters initiative that I strongly believe patronizes the people it purports to represent. (Example: clinically obese people modeling swimsuits). It wasn’t and we just got it wrong.’

“We do a show 5 days a week. It’s impossible not to make an honest mistake at some point. If you felt personally offended by this error, I apologize. We just didn’t know (didn’t say so in the ad) that the underwear was handicapped accessible,” concluded Owens.

Although Applegate hasn’t personally responded to Owen’s tweets, it seems clear that she read them and appears to have addressed them in another tweet that includes an image of the ad that started it all Thursday afternoon.

“Thank you @SKIMS for showing how beautiful the disabled community is and for your adaptive line for those of us with mobility issues. I’m not sure how you could not appreciate this and think it was an “honest mistake,” Applegate said.

The actress took her 12-year-old daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble to the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards in late February, where she was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Netflix’s Dead to Me.

She arrived at the ceremony and walked the red carpet with her daughter while carrying a black cane that had “FU MS” written on the bottom.

Applegate told the Los Angeles Times that this would probably be her “last awards show as an actress, so it’s a big deal.”

“Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on set; I don’t have that in me at this moment,” she explained.
