Christina Ricci, who played the role of Wednesday Addams in the 1990 film adaptations of The Addams Family, has been cast in the upcoming Netflix series directed by Tim Burton focused on Wednesdays. Her role will not be announced, according to Variety, she will not play an older version of the dead goth she played in the original films. Nor will she play the Addams family matriarch, Morticia. Catherine Zeta-Jones will play Morticia, with Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams.
Meanwhile, the role of Wednesday is played by Jenna Ortega (Jane the Virgin), who is now a teenager and attends Nevermore Academy. The show is described as a supernatural mystery mixed with school drama. Wednesday seeks to harness her nascent psychic abilities while also stopping a string of murders and delving into a supernatural mystery decades ago.
Ricci’s involvement is unclear, but gives the series a small meta advantage. And hey, the multiverse is in the zeitgeist.
The role puts Ricci in a minor phase: After appearing briefly on The Matrix Resurrections, she recently helmed Showtime’s lively series Yellowjackets. Netflix Wednesday comes from Al Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville), with Burton leading the run of the series. The show is expected to premiere later in 2022.
