History and Meaning of Christmas 2023: Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25th?
Christmas, derived from the words “Mass of Christ,” marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus was born in Bethlehem to his parents Joseph and Mary. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born while Mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. It is believed that on March 25, Mother Mary learned that she would give birth to a special child, and nine months later, on December 25, Jesus was born. However, there is no evidence that he was born on December 25th as the Gregorian calendar did not exist then. Instead, the story of the birth of Jesus Christ is found in the New Testament Gospels of Luke and Matthew. According to early Roman history, the birth of Jesus Christ was first traced to December 25 in the 4th century. Christmas was first documented in 336, during the reign of Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor and then Roman Emperor.
Countries around the world have different names for festivals. In Germany it is called Yuletide, in Spanish Navidad, in Italian Natale and in French Noël. Additionally, some Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on January 6, Epiphany, when they believe he was baptized.
In the meantime, Christmas was born with the legend of Saint Nicholas and his many miracles. Although much of his story is unconfirmed, the man who became Saint Nicholas lived in the 4th century and was probably a bishop in Asia Minor. The feast of Saint Nicholas was celebrated in his honor on December 6th and gifts were presented the evening before. The tradition was well established in many European countries by the 12th century. Because St. Nicholas Day and Christmas Day are so close together, their traditions ended up generally being combined.
Christmas has a religious meaning for Christians. On this day they commemorate Jesus Christ and remember his sacrifices for humanity. People also hold mass services and thank Jesus for eliminating hatred and greed from the world, eradicating evil and providing happiness. They believe that since he came to save all of humanity from all the suffering, his final sacrifice during the crucifixion must be remembered.
