The City of Montreal’s budget, due to be presented on November 15, risks harming taxpayers, but also workers, who will for the first time be deprived of a “Christmas party” in order to reduce spending.

According to human resources specialist Annie Boilard, it’s important for employees to have “those moments of coming together and recognition.” These are special moments of connection,” she explains in an interview on Mario Dumont’s show on Monday.
She believes there is no need to “have a big banquet” to thank her employees. “It depends more on the intention,” especially since the employer is not obliged to offer a Christmas party, emphasizes the president of the Annie RH Network.

However, such a termination with a notice period of a few days to weeks will have an impact on the working atmosphere.
“It’s a disappointment for the work teams… “It’s not fair, it’s not fair.” Many plan their hairstyle and clothing in advance. It can really be a source of disappointment,” adds Ms Boilard.
Following the questionable spending at the Office de Consultation Publique de Montréal uncovered by our investigative agency, staff may view the situation as even more unfair.
“In terms of perception for the employee… We look for recognition, people work hard, they are involved in their work, we expect a thank you. Let us feel that we are making a difference,” emphasizes the expert.
For Annie Boilard, it is not necessary to throw a huge party to reward employees, but a Christmas activity can also be considered.
“There are lots of other ways to do it. It can be a volunteer activity, fun, team building… It’s a good thing! With remote working and hybrid government, people need to come together again,” she explains.
Inflation and fears of recession are getting on the nerves of many people. “These are not the best years at the moment.”
