Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Miller has given his seal of approval to the much-talked-about Coyote vs. Acme, calling the film “delightful.”
Miller, the producer of the animated hits Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie, went on X on Tuesday night to reveal that he had seen Coyote and confirmed this quality.
“I saw COYOTE VS ACME and it’s adorable” Miller tweeted. “Funny, charming, good comedy timing with a surprising amount of heart. I hope several studios get involved so the world can see all the good work people have done.”
Last Friday, broke the news that Dave Green’s film would be the third Warner Bros. film already in production to be canceled, following the previous scrapping of the nearly completed projects Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday meeting in August 2022.
The decision to shelve the film for tax reasons sparked an outcry in the creative community. Sources told THR that after the Coyote news broke last week, several filmmakers told their representatives to cancel planned meetings with Warners. But now that Coyote may finally find a new home, these filmmakers are taking a wait-and-see approach.
Warners eventually made a dramatic about-face and is now allowing Green to sell the film to other potential buyers rather than shelving the project because of a tax write-off.
The $72 million film, a live-action, CG-animated hybrid, starred John Cena and legendary Looney Toons character Wile E. Coyote and boasted co-helmer James Gunn DC Studios, as producer. THR reported that, unlike the other films Warners canceled, “Coyote” was fully completed and tested multiple times throughout the ’90s.
Miller is among a group of filmmakers who saw Coyote. Writer-director BenDavid Grabinski, who worked with Green on “Happily,” tweeted: “Coyote vs. Acme is a great movie. The best of its kind since then [Who Framed Roger Rabbit] … The main actors are super likeable. It’s beautifully shot. The animation is great. The ending makes everyone cry. I thought the goal of this business was to make hit films?”
