Nine people died and another 40 were injured after the ceiling and walls of the Santa Cruz church collapsed in Ciudad Madero, Mexico. The case occurred this Saturday (1st) during a baptism ceremony.

According to local authorities, the collapse occurred at around 2:18 p.m. (local time, 5:40 p.m. Brazil time) when the upper part of the temple collapsed, allegedly due to a structural failure.

According to the Diario de Mexico newspaper, dozens of families were attending a joint baptism ceremony when the accident occurred

Of the almost 100 people who were on site, at least 50 were trapped in the rubble.

Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villareal lamented the tragedy on his Twitter account and reported that rescue workers were being mobilized to help the victims.

Military personnel are currently supporting emergency services by using rescue dogs and earthmoving equipment to identify and excavate survivors from church ruins in Ciudad Madero, a Gulf Coast city near the port of Tampico.
