The Ukrainian city of Kherson, which was captured by Russia at the start of the war between the two countries, will switch to the ruble from May 1st.

The information comes from the Russian state agency Ria Novosti, which quotes Moscow’s sworn vice president of the regional administration, Kirill Stremousov.

According to him, for the next four months, Kherson will use both the ruble and the Ukrainian hryvnia, but after that only Russian currency will be accepted.

“Kyiv will no longer be able to impose on the city its Nazi policies and oppress its people and its language,” said Stremousov, an ethnic RussianUkrainian already under investigation in his country for collaborating with separatists.

With almost 300,000 inhabitants, Cherson is located at the mouth of the Dnipro River, the gateway to the annexed Crimea, and was conquered by Russia right at the beginning of the invasion. Due to its strategic location, it can be used as a base for a possible offensive against Odessa, the main port city of Ukraine.

Moscow has already stated the goal of establishing a land corridor between Crimea and the breakaway regions of Donbass, but is unsure whether to attempt to seize all of southern Ukraine, which would lead the Russians into the rebel Moldovan territory of Transnistria.

There is also speculation that Russia may organize a “referendum” in the coming weeks to try to put a democratic veneer on a future annexation of Kherson.
