The Progress Pride flag is an evolution of the rainbow flag, which has been a symbol of queer visibility for decades. The black and brown colors represent queer black people and PoC (People of Color), the light blue, pink and white colors are taken from the trans flag. The intersex symbol is yellow with a purple circle in the center and aims to draw attention to the struggle of intersex people for the right to physical integrity. The flag also symbolizes that the queer community itself is changing and developing.
The original rainbow flag was first waved at the 1978 Gay Freedom Day parade in San Francisco. The flag consisted of eight colors, each with a specific meaning: pink represented sexuality, red life, orange healing, yellow sunlight, green nature, and turquoise art. Indigo blue represented harmony and the purple spirit.
Mayor Stadler: “Violence against queer people is ubiquitous, there are reports of it every day. It is therefore particularly important to create awareness and send visible signals that Austria is a country of freedom, democracy and diversity and opposes any form of discrimination.”
