Civil protection triggers yellow alert in El Salvador

The situation in the country has remained tense in recent days due to recurrent rainfall, which will continue in the coming hours and bring with it the possibility of the formation of a tropical depression.

A report from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) indicates that the yellow alert activates the municipal disaster management commissions in the coastal strip of El Salvador at a time when there is an 80 percent chance of a tropical cyclone forming in the next 48 hours.

In the country, the warning system is divided into green (beware of possible threats), orange (beware of possible threats), yellow (prepare for possible threats) and red (take action in case of impending danger).

The civil protection agency said the warning was due to a special report issued by MARN on Friday that suggested there was a high chance of a tropical cyclone forming off the coast of either El Salvador or Guatemala.

The company added that it was possible that two low-pressure systems in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans could interact to create a “broad low-pressure area across northwestern Central America” that could increase rainfall in the coastal area “potentially beginning early Monday morning.” »

Authorities warned that given the climate instability, there was a medium to high chance of sudden flooding in rivers and streams, urban flooding, landslides, falling rocks, trees and billboards, especially in the central coastal strip and the eastern part of the country.
