Clarkson’s Farm star Kaleb Cooper said he was “paying himself 50p an hour” as he highlighted farming difficulties on Friday.

The 24-year-old farmer, who rose to fame on the TV show starring Jeremy Clarkson, has since gone into business for himself, buying eight calves.

In a recent interview he explained the cost of feeding the animals and that he has to take a low wage to eventually make a profit from them.

Kaleb told the Performance People podcast, “When I’m working for myself, when I’m feeding my calves, I’ve bought eight calves, it’s a bit like a new business idea that I’m doing.

“And then you feed them milk – which costs me about £200 a calf – and then sell them after nine months to make a profit to see if it works, you know.”

He added: “But I just worked out what my hourly rate is the other day. I pay myself 50p an hour so I can make money. But if I go down to £10 an hour I’m not making any money, I’m losing money on the calves.

Kaleb plays one half of the unlikely brace that went a long way in making Clarkson’s Farm such a hit on Amazon Prime Video.

The show, which follows Jeremy’s attempts to farm his own 1,000-acre property after his former farmer retired, recently broke viewership records.

The season two premiere of the farming show was watched by 4.3 million viewers, according to Barb, the official audience research group.

The numbers made it Amazon’s highest-rated show since the company began reporting viewership in November 2021, beating hit hit The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which launched last year with 3.2 million viewers on the platform became.

CLARKSON’S FARM SERIES TWO: The Reviews

THE GUARD

“Infectiously Funny”

Evaluation: Who is All Quiet On The Western Front039s leading man

“It would be too much to say that Jeremy Clarkson is complex or an enigma. It contains no masses. But he has the disarming ability to showcase different versions of himself. At one end of the Clarkson spectrum is the right-wing bullying columnist, at the other end is the host of Clarkson’s Farm, a thoroughly likable reality show of over-the-top fame. It’s something the man’s many, not incorrect, critics might not have credited him with: harmless fun.

INDEPENDENT

“Jeremy is a superbly articulate and charismatic advocate for rural causes”

Evaluation: Who is All Quiet On The Western Front039s leading man

“Those with a low Clarkson tolerance will struggle with Clarkson’s Farm. It’s riddled with Clarksonisms and heavy-handed pomposity… But what Clarkson understands – has always understood since the early days of Top Gear – is that there’s a sweet speck of made-up reality somewhere between Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the News at Ten’

‘Clarkson’s Farm continues to please and show a softer side to the now 62-year-old, while still proving he’s just as irascible, unruly and irresponsible as ever… Add some cleverly and humorously chosen classic soundtrack edits ( featuring everyone from The Who to Simon and Garfunkel) and whether you love him or hate him, you can’t help but be intrigued by Clarkson’s attempts to transform his farm into something that’s both profitable and sustainable.
