French President Emmanuel Macron “spoke to Federal President Steinmeier on the phone and informed him about the situation in his country” and asked for “the planned state visit to Germany to be postponed”. The postponement comes amid tensions shaking the country following the death of 17-year-old Nahel, who was killed by a police officer in Nanterre.
Berlin has announced that “the visit will be made up for as soon as possible”. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier “regrets the cancellation” of Macron’s visit “and fully understands the situation in the neighboring country,” the German Presidency further said, emphasizing that “the Federal President is following developments with great attention” and ” he hopes that the violence in the streets will end as soon as possible and that social peace can be restored.”
