An environmental activist sprayed paint on a canvas by Canadian painter Tom Thompson on display at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa on Tuesday before slamming his hand on the floor.

In a video posted to On2Ottawa’s Instagram account, an activist identified as Kaleb can be seen throwing pink paint at Canadian painter Tom Thompson’s ‘Northern River’ canvas before placing his hand on the ground.

“Hello everyone, I’m sorry for the inconvenience. Are you shocked? They’re probably waiting for the police to take me out of here and put me in jail. “I feel like you. The fossil fuel industry is destroying our planet’s artwork and governments are doing nothing to stop their crimes,” he says.

On2Ottawa describes itself on its website as an activist group fighting the climate and environmental crisis with civil disobedience.

This event follows a trend sparked elsewhere in the world by activists from the group Just Stop Oil, who have destroyed several artworks over the past year to draw attention to the climate crisis and denounce government inaction.
