Climate change: Drought causes dead bodies to surface in Las Vegas lake

A body was found in a barrel in Lake Mead, Nevada, where Las Vegas is located in the United States, after a severe drought reduced the reservoir’s water level to unprecedented levels. According to local officials, the discovery could only be the first of many such discoveries at the site.

“I would say there is a very good chance that we will find more human remains as the water levels drop,” said Lt. Ray Spencer of the Las Vegas Police Department opposite local television station KLASTV. The lake may even have been a place where bodies were dumped by criminal organizations.

Personal items found in the barrel suggest the person died more than 40 years ago in the 1980s, the lieutenant said. The official has not confirmed the cause of death of the person found in Lake Mead as the investigation into the case is ongoing.

Police plan to contact experts at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas so technicians can analyze the exact moment the barrel began to wear out. In parallel, the Clark County Coroner’s Office will attempt to determine the person’s age and gender.

The barrel was found by boaters in early May, and US National Park Service rangers were immediately called and combed the area near Hemenway Harbor on Lake Mead when they found the compartment contained skeletal remains.

Running through Las Vegas, Lake Mead is the largest manmade lake in the United States and, together with Lake Powell, serves more than 40 million people in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and southern Mexico.
