Climate crisis and artificial intelligence on the UN agenda in Davos

The UN chief will arrive at the world economic event in Switzerland this Tuesday and call for addressing what he sees as two existential threats to the planet.

On Wednesday, the High Representative will deliver his special State of the World address, also focusing on political fragmentation and its impact on polarization.

Guterres will call on leaders to prevent further damage by advancing institutional reform and restoring trust to put the planet back on the path to security, prosperity and peace.

His program at the event, considered one of the most influential private meetings in international finance, also includes bilateral discussions with several global and private sector leaders.

On Thursday he will travel to Thun, also in Switzerland, where he will take part in the annual retreat of all his special representatives, heads of peace missions and political missions.

The Davos Forum, founded by the German economist and entrepreneur Klaus Schwab, is considered the most important in the economic sector.

The event, taking place January 15-19, will bring together leading business leaders, politicians, academics and social scientists to analyze humanity's most pressing problems.

More than 60 world leaders will attend the event, including United States President Joe Biden; that of China, Xi Jinping; from France: Emmanuel Macron; and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Business leaders are also taking part, such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates; Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla; and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

At the same time, celebrities such as Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Bono, Paulo Coelho and Tony Blair (member of the Council of the World Economic Forum Foundation) intervene.

Experts say that in a rather turbulent world like finance, their debates ignore some of the real problems facing poor countries, most of them on a global scale.

In this edition, the theme of the meeting is “Rebuilding Trust”, with the aim of restoring global cooperation and solidarity in the face of the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, inequality and digital transformation.
