A cyclist who was seriously injured in a concrete mixer accident in Berlin has died. The accident caused commotion because, according to firefighters, a special vehicle that was supposed to help free the woman from under the truck was stuck in a traffic jam caused by a climate protest.
This is said to have been triggered by an action by the climate protest group “Last Generation”.
Police are investigating climate activists after the Berlin incident
Police are investigating two climate activists, 63 and 59 years old, for failing to provide assistance or for the disability of those who provide assistance. Following the death of the cyclist, who had already been declared brain dead on Thursday, it will be examined whether the manslaughter claim can also be considered, a spokeswoman for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday. An autopsy of the 44-year-old’s body will be requested to clarify what specifically led to her death. An essential point is the question of causality and who is responsible for what, the spokeswoman explained.
Rescue of injured woman delayed several minutes
The Berlin fire brigade assumes that the woman’s rescue was delayed several minutes because the special vehicle was stuck in traffic. However, a spokesperson admitted that the formation of a rescue runway was also problematic. Because the technology wasn’t available, first responders at the crash site had to improvise, according to the fire department. This resulted in delays. The fire brigade did not provide any information as to whether this had an impact on the cyclist’s health.
“Last Generation” expressed its condolences to relatives
The group “Ultima Geração” expressed its condolences to the cyclist’s family. “We are shocked,” spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs said on Friday. At the same time, the group announced that it would continue: “The federal government must end our protest – now that the crisis is under control. Until then, resistance will continue,” she said in a statement.
Climate activists are increasingly under attack
After the accident, the tone deepened in response to the actions of the climate protest group. Numerous politicians have called for tougher action, and climate activists are increasingly being attacked on social media. The “Last Generation” said, “Any public hate speech we face as people will not stop us from doing the one thing that is morally right: not staying in a major crisis, but getting started.”
