The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Highway 20 West, at kilometer 132, confirmed Sergeant Catherine Bernard of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in an interview with Vingt55. Two people were injured in the one-vehicle accident, the 28-year-old driver of the car and the 18-year-old passenger, Sergeant Bernard said.
The car and its two occupants swerved violently, according to information provided to authorities: “The car rolled over more than once before stopping on the right side,” says the spokesman for Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
The two occupants were treated and stabilized by paramedics and taken to the clinic. According to an initial assessment, the authorities do not fear for the lives of the two inmates, explains Sergent Savoie.
Highway 20 West was closed to westbound traffic. A paramedic and accident scene investigators were dispatched to the scene to determine the circumstances of this forcible exit from the road, the spokesman confirmed.
The closure and the detours motorists had to take caused significant slowdowns and congestion for motorists coming from Drummondville.
According to authorities, excessive speed and recklessness could explain the circumstances of this accident.
The investigation is ongoing, confirmed the spokesman for the Sûreté du Québec, indicating that the expressways were reopened westbound at around 3:30 p.m. following the intervention of rehabilitation experts and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
